The amount of smoke generated during a fire is related to the nature of the material and the burning conditions. For example, the amount of smoke produced by FRP is larger than that of wood, and when FRP burns, the higher the temperature, the greater the amount of smoke. The smoke is very harmful, mainly in:

1. Toxicity of smoke

Combustion consumes a lot of oxygen, leading to a lack of oxygen in the air. Studies have shown that when the air CO2 exceeds 20% or the oxygen content is less than 6%, it will cause death in a short time. When hydrogen cyanide reaches 270 ppm in the air, it can cause death. Many harmful and toxic gases in the flue gas, such as H2S, Nils, Ch, etc., will cause death when they reach a certain concentration. In addition, the suspended particles in the flue gas can cause harm to people.

2. The shading effect of smoke

The presence of smoke will weaken the light intensity, leading to shortening of human visibility. The visibility distance is related to the correct judgment of personnel when a fire occurs, and directly affects the evacuation, rescue and fire fighting. In a fire, the visibility distance of people who are familiar with the interior of the building is required to be less than 5m, and for those who are not familiar with the interior of the building, the visibility is required to be no less than 30m. If the smoke is not controlled, it will be difficult for people to find emergency instructions and find the correct evacuation route during a fire. The short distance of visibility can easily cause panic, reduce self-rescue ability, cause chaos and difficulty in escape.

3. High temperature hazards of flue gas

At the beginning of the fire (5-20 minutes), the flue gas temperature can reach 250°C, and then the temperature will drop when the air volume is insufficient. When the burning reaches the window burst or the window is opened artificially, the combustion suddenly intensifies, and the temperature can reach 500~C in a short time. The high temperature spreads the fire rapidly, reduces the strength of the metal material, and causes the building to collapse. At the same time, high temperature can cause burns, coma, etc.
